Online concert CONFESSION from the Great Hall of Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at 6 PM UTC+02.

Free online streaming from www.jvlma.lv

The concert will begin with the premiere of Selga Mence’s cycle “Summer Visions” (2020). The dazzling glitter of light in the miniature “Sun’s halo” and the hymnically ecstatic “Morning” contrast with the threatening storm in the “Clouds” and the terrible depth in the “Earth’s breath”.

The dramatic Second Piano Sonata (2004) by Imants Zemzaris depicts the transcendental beauty of the Garden of Paradise and the loss of an unattainable dream. The theme of the loneliness of the sonata final is enhanced by intonations from Franz Schubert’s song “Doppelgänger”. The first part of the concert will end with the premiere of Imants Zemzaris multifaceted composition “Eine andere Wandererfantasie” (2019).

In commemoration of the 210th anniversary of the Polish piano genius Frederic Chopin, the second part will be dedicated to a poetic cycle of 24 preludes op. 28, which was completed in 1839, when Chopin spent the winter in Spain with the writer Georges Sand on the island of Majorca. The mystique of the dark monastery of Valldemossa, the pain of unfulfilled illusions, another brutal outbreak of the disease – these are some characteristics of emotionally psychological situation of that time. At the forefront is a stunningly true, subtly felt, and thoughtful vision of time that encompasses the whole of human life.

The concert is supported by the Latvian State Culture Capital Foundation.
